It’s a work of quiet intelligence and enormous tenderness
— The Stage

Directed by Eoin McKenzie and co-created in collaboration with Robbie Synge and young performer Alfie, The Show for Young Men is a funny and tender new contemporary dance performance that poetically considers the complexities of modern-day masculinity as it affects both boys and men.

With humour, risky physical duets and heartfelt choreography, The Show for Young Men depicts the friendship between a boy and a man as they dance and play together. In matching boiler suits they construct and deconstruct their environment, each one pulling the other towards a different goal. As their bond deepens, and shared conflicts arise, they both learn that there are many ways to be a man.

Working towards a hopeful image of male care and compassion in a world filled with violence, dominance, and isolation, The Show for Young Men is a bold attempt to challenge outdated traditions of manhood, championing boys’ and men’s capacities for care, friendship, and vulnerability.

The original performance premiered at Dance Base as part of the Made in Scotland Showcase (2024) at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and has since been performed at Edinburgh International Children’s Festival (2025) and in co-production with Aaben Dans in Roskilde, Denmark, with a Danish cast (2025). The Show for Young Men was developed with support from Creative Europe’s PUSH+ Programme, and Imaginate’s Accelerator programme, and through residencies with The Ark, Dublin and Aaben Dans, Roskilde.
